Enough with Letterpress

So many Letterpress postings. Work in other classes has been slow, or just a lot of reading an research.

In Design Rebels we had to research a socially conscious design firm, write 500 words, and design those words into a piece.

My firm was Quilted, they do web development, but they do it for awesome clients and do a lot of pro-bono work!

I designed my "paper" into a zine, something cheap and accessible to the masses.
It was my first dive into the world of zines and a good start.
If you want a copy let me know!

NY and Hatch

Well, the NY AIGA trip is all set.
Here is the final rundown of studios
Worldstudio
Chopping Block
Trollback & Co.
AIGA National Design Center
Chermayeff and Geismar
Pushpin Studios
Milton Glaser

Our group will be split up for Glaser/Pushpin.
I'll be going to Pushpin and I'm stoked.
Seymour has been emailing me which still feels crazy.

On another note.
We recieved our woodbocks from Hatch Show Print.
My poet came in and picked out the one that inspired her which is this one.

(excuse the picture quality)

We are collaborating with poets to make a publication that will be available to buy.
Ours will be dedicated to Hatch so this is why it is featuring their blocks.

I did some experiments with mine due to the fact it is much larger than the spread size

Geeze Louise

Visually not much has been going on. Hopefully soon I will scan in some notebook doodles.
A bit of letterpess. This are just hectic.
Ill be gone to Oak Knoll Fest in Delaware this weekend then the 16th-18th will be the AIGA New York studio tours.
I need [hate using that saying..have to find something to take it's place] a small digital camera to boost my photo taking.
And side note...the roasted red pepper and gouda soup at strawberry st market rules my life!

Whirlwind

Wow, I have been so busy lately, between classes, homework from classes, AIGA stuff, and having a migraine just about every night from lack of having time to eat.

Sucks that it is only Monday too.

Projects in classes haven't really picked up yet either. There has just been a lot of e-mailing (feeling like I need an iPhone just to check my e-mail constantly). Also a lot of reading, and research.

So I have purchased a lot of books in the recent weeks via Amazon and Chop Suey [which is closing its first location, so go there and support them while getting a great deal on great books!]

I haven't read them through and through but what I have read so far has been pretty inspiring.

No Logo.
A required book for Design Rebels, but so informative!

Michael Bierut's 79 Short Essays on Design.
3 stories in and loving it.
Check out Design Observer for a look at most of the essays.
I like having them in a book since staring at the screen too much can kill my head.

Less is More.
Picked this up at Chop Suey. Haven't had the chance to read it yet but looking forward to it. I mean look at that cover!

Design and Undesign. Not having had a good knowledge of Tibor Kalman but knowing that he was Stefan Sagmeister's idol I wanted to know more. So far this book has been a great starting point to my quest for Tibor knowledge.

So there's my reading rainbow. Hopefully soon more posts on my actual work!

My First Crush

I just saw this video last night. Although the idea has been done before [Nick Park], I really enjoy the animation in this. And the interviews are so funny.

Check out more on Julia Pott here at her website!

Glaser and Curtains

I can't believe the week is not over yet. I had three back to back classes today, and a migraine!

Anyways, I'll begin with Glaser.
I really enjoyed and appreciated Milton Glaser
Here is a great video short by Hillman Curtis, that shows much of his work and ideas.
But, I was so disappointed this summer when a friend showed me this from Design Observer.
It is very hard sometimes to not have many women superstar designers to look up to, so I totally see where this question came from.

Now, onto curtains.
I was facing a dilemma when it came to my kitchen/awkward living area in my apartment. I didn't like to spend time in that room and i knew it was in need of some color. So, I had the plan to buy one of those "Bedspreads" they sell at Urban Outfitters. Well, I would call it more a 90" by 100" piece of cotton with some cool design on it. Either way, I picked up one on sale for 10 dollars. I measured my windows and was able to make 2 panels out of the one piece I bought.
A semi-descent photo:

I dont know if this gives them complete justice, but I am really enjoying them.
And they match my yellow table.
Here's a close up of the print on them

Soon this will be my workspace too, so it is nice to have it be a bit more cheerful.

The fabric can be used for many projects and I think they usually have a lot of it on sale in the store since they have so many patterns and no one in their right mind would pay the full price of 32 dollars [Such a rip off!]

Old Poster

This is a poster from sophomore year. I'll revisit it soon to do some refinement.

The building is the Seattle Central Library.

There it is in real life. Such an amazing piece of architecture I recommend reading more about it. Heres a link from an article in The Seattle Times.

Beginnings

Well, I have decided to dive back into the world of online journaling.
Yet this will be a different experience for me.
I'll be using this journal to post current design projects, process work, photographs, crafts, and any outside inspirational work.
